The film is set in 1980's rural India. Chittibabu, a pure and innocent guy with partial deafness, earns his livelihood by supplying water to agricultural lands in the fictional village of Rangasthalam. I have only been to Africa twice and it was clear that, although we were largely in tourist spots, this was a completely different world to the one we knew.
On a trip to Gambia we were invited into a home in an outback village and saw the primitive conditions in which families lived and children went to school.
These memories of the early 1990s were sparked by Ousmane Sembène's highly-regarded Mandabi which was filmed in the Senegalese capital of Dakar in 1968.
The director gives an insight into his continent with what was apparently the first feature ever made in an African language.
It focuses on Ibrahim (Makhouredia Gueye), a pompous but unemployed man who lives with his two wives (Ynousse N'Diaye and Isseu Niang) and seven children in what can only be described as a shack.
The women are expected to see to his every need despite him providing the square root of nothing.
Yep, this is the world before female emancipation - although we later see that Ibrahim's sister (Thérèse Bas) does not accept playing second fiddle to him.
She is involved in the tale because her son wants his uncle to look after a money order he has sent from Paris.
The 25,000 francs are a potential life-changer when delivered by a nosy postman and grabbed avariciously by the wives.
Indeed, in their minds, they have already spent the money before their husband even arrives home.
As the word is spread among impoverished neighbours and unscrupulous contacts, it becomes clear that the windfall is much more trouble than it's worth.
Initially, it gives Ibrahim the chance to puff his shoulders out but he soon learns that his lack of wiliness with money simply makes him a target.
However, he is desperate not to lose face while being persistently ripped off.
Mandabi reaches deep into Senegalese life and culture and I found myself willing Ibrahim and his wives to have a break from those preying on them.
But Sembène doesn't soft-soap his audience, preferring a thoughtful ending rather than a neat one.
As I watched it at Broadway Cinema in Nottingham, I felt the conclusion was too abrupt but, on reflection, it was just right.

Did you know? Sembène spent his early years as a fisherman. He worked as a bricklayer, plumber, and apprentice mechanic until he was drafted into the French army in 1939. In 1942, during World War II, he joined the Free French forces and landed in France for the first time in 1944. After demobilisation he remained in France, working as a docker in Marseille, and became a militant trade unionist. Sembène taught himself to read and write in French and in 1956 published his first novel, Le Docker noir based on his experiences in Marseille.

I hardly ever have the chance to watch movies made from an African perspective and yet I have seen two in the past 24 hours.
Before I stepped back in time with Mandabi, Mrs W and I encountered Jan Philipp Weyl's against-the-odds story of two young men who grew up in remote Ethiopia.
Running Against The Wind stars Ashenafi Nigusu as Abdi whose athletic abilities are apparent even across the poor farmland where he grew up.
His best friend Soloman (Mikias Wolde) has chosen a different path, running away to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to seek his fortune with a stolen camera.
Soloman teams up with a group of runaways and orphans who eke out an existence in a shack at the side of a busy road.
They are among the many have-nots in Africa and every day is a matter of survival.
Sadly, there are temptations and Solomon is taken down many a wrong path before his conscience prevails.
Meanwhile, Abdi has huge potential as a runner but he finds difficulty in wiping away his past in order to create a prosperous future.
Inevitably, things take a turn for both men when their paths cross once again.
Their fight against adversity is at the heart of Weyl's film and it also gives foreign audiences an opportunity to look inside Ethiopia which has never previously put forward a movie for an Academy award.
I suspect that one of the reasons it didn't make the shortlist is because it jolts around too much - with too many very short scenes.
If Ethiopia's movie-makers can understand that less is often more, they may be successful next time.

“The Serpent” written and directed by Gia Skova hits the big screen on June 19, 2021, in Hollywood, California. For the first-time movie maker, this is a big deal. It is a big deal for any movie maker.
Gia grew up with the idea to always do things right the first time because that way, you do not have to waste time later fixing your mistakes. Her idea holds true with "The Serpent" going straight to the big screen in Hollywood the first time out of the starting gate. The film premiered first in Dubai and from there it came straight to Hollywood.
The movie is about agent Lucinda Kavsky the beautiful, highly trained CIA agent who is a lethal weapon. When her special assignment goes awry, she finds out that she is being played by her own people. She uncovers the plot and in so doing, finds a labyrinth of lies and secrets that have been masking a massive conspiracy.
Follow Lucinda in an action-packed ride that keeps you in suspense until the very end. The Serpent is being released by Vertical Entertainment in cinemas on June 19, 2021. Anyone who has witnessed a classic football match or seen a fantastic movie will know that an awful lot can happen in 90 minutes.
Nevertheless, I cannot recall a film whose story was focused on such a short time until I watched Szabolcs Hajdu's Treasure City.
Here are a handful of intimate tales which have a connecting, albeit sometimes tenuous, thread.
It makes for intense rather than happy viewing as family, political and romantic relationships all explode on screen.
But there is also a dab of surrealism to several of the key scenes - including an argument in a florist's shop which gets out of hand, an unexpected encounter in a bar and a demonstration against perceived injustices under an undemocratic regime.
All the action takes places at night in an unnamed Hungarian city and the darkness adds to the bleak atmosphere.
And there is some high-quality acting from the likes of Lilla Sárosdi and Orsolya Török-Illyé backed by a searing soundtrack from Freakin’ Disco.
But, while it gives a glimpse of Hungarian culture, Treasure City has too many strands for my liking and no resolutions, so left me a tad dissatisfied.

I have not been a young person for a very long time and the rap culture is a foreign field to me so I have to admit that this film about Danny Hernandez was a tough watch.
Hernandez has apparently gained worldwide fame in the name of Tekashi69 or 6ix9ine with songs which felt like an attack on my ears when played in Vikram Gandhi's film.
I learned that Hernandez has had multiple Billboard Chart hits and is obsessed with both power and money.
The main takeaway of this picture is that he would sell out anyone, even those closest to him, to achieve his goals.
To be fair to Gandhi, he pursues every imaginable angle in the Hernandez story - with the exception of a direct interview with the subject - and includes contributions with those who were closest to him.
They have no compunction about revealing all because the rapper doesn't appear to believe in loyalty himself.
After all, he has given evidence against many people resulting in their long jail terms in return for reducing his own.
Yes, at the same time as being a success in the music charts and on international tours, he has also been heavily involved with New York gangs.
So, we hear how he drifted into violence while cultivating the personality of Tekashi69.
Gandhi explores the chronology of his rise to fame and how he fell from what he perceived as the top of the tree.
But he also examines the cult of personality and how social media plays such an enormous part in increasing the profile of those who are willing to push boundaries.
In other words, he tries to fathom why someone with no obvious singing talent but hundreds of tattoos, metal teeth, multi-coloured hair and a penchant for violence becomes an icon.
Unfortunately, while he does get under the skin of the Hernandez story, he cannot explain the inexplicable.

Ninety minutes watching farmyard animals without a human in sight is an unlikely premise for a tearjerker.
However, I found myself welling up when a sow was left oinking in despair as the offspring, nurtured over weeks, are taken away, leaving her alone.
The first scenes of Viktor Kossakovsky's movie see the mother pig give birth to a dozen babies.
They emerge, eyes barely open but able to explore unsteadily before searching for a nourishing teet.
From the outset, we recognise that some piglets are born strong while there are also those who may not survive.
For example, we witness as one struggles to impose himself and is nudged away from potential food by hungry and unsympathetic siblings.
I found myself counting the drove over and over as the film progresses because I feared that there could be casualties.
I am sad to report the full complement did not make it.
The drama over the pigs is much more involving than I would have expected but I have to say I was less beguiled when the camera lingers over a coop of chickens and a herd of cows.
The difference here was that there were not such obvious personalities to lure me in.
Consequently, I have to admit that I dropped off for a couple of micro-sleeps. Yep, 90 minutes of watching farm animals might have touched my emotion a bit but the film was too long for my concentration to remain at its peak.

At the beginning of major football tournaments, I am usually giddy with excitement and have bedecked my car and house with the cross of St. George.
Maybe it's because of the pandemic but I feel incredibly low-key about the Euros but clearly others are not feeling the same way as this movie from Poland reveals.
Lukasz Wisniewski's film reflects the national thirst for success on the pitch as well as the ups and downs of the manager (Cezary Pazura), star player (Maciej Musiał) and journalist (Jacek Knap).
Oh, and there are the inevitable very attractive young women who are attached to the beautiful game.
Marianna Zydek plays one such lass - a hospital boss who is being set up by her friend for a liaison with Musiał's egocentric striker.
The thing is she has no interest in football or narcissists and so falls instead for Knap's sports reporter before she knows what he does for a living.
Oh, did I mention that she is also the national team manager's daughter and the journalist is howling for him to be sacked after a defeat in a crunch match?
Inevitably, dad disapproves of her romantic tie-up but the more he protests, the stronger is her defiance.
This is a rom-com so there is a catalogue of misunderstandings before love can find its true course.
Meanwhile, Poland are preparing for a crucial qualifier against an old foe, Germany.
Thankfully, although Poland's national stadium is central to the storyline, we don't see any of the usual excruciating scenes in which actors try to play the beautiful game.
Sadly, however, there is a swathe of stereotypes from the emotionally-stunted footballer, to the under-pressure manager, shameless editor and blonde man-chaser.
Mrs W left the auditorium with about five minutes remaining to take an important call. The film was so predictable, she described the conclusion without watching it.
I would have also been interested to know the view of the two very attractive young women who were the only others in the auditorium.
Why? Because I am convinced at least one of them was the girlfriend of a Derby County footballer who also happens to be a Polish international.
Sadly, he won't be at the Euros because he is injured. Now, never mind Poland. Come on England.
